Protective Gear

Motorcycle leathers are a type of specialised protective clothing designed to prevent injury to a motorcyclist who is involved in a traffic accident. Motorcycle leathers are generally either one piece suits or a two piece jacket and trouser combination. They are worn in conjunction with other items of protective clothing such as a helmet, boots and gloves to ensure the highest possible level of protection.

In order for motorcycle leathers to be effective they must be made from very thick, high quality and durable leather. Poor quality motorcycle leathers will offer very little protection, particularly against long skids which will easily tear apart cheap motorcycle leathers. In order to maximise protection motorcycle leathers are sometimes reinforced a crucial points such as the knees and elbows with additional padding or metal panels under the leather. This will help to keep the rider safe should they be thrown off their bike and then slide along the tarmac.

Motorcycle leathers are intended for riding on the road and are generally not suited to off road bikes. People who ride off road bikes also require special protective clothing, although this usually consists of specially reinforced plastic body armour rather than motorcycle leathers. The colour of motorcycle leathers can also have an effect on a rider’s safety. Studies have shown that riders who wear dark or black motorcycle leathers are more likely to be involved in an accident as people wearing light coloured motorcycle leathers are more visible to other road users in daylight and night time.
